Late Snow Reminds Me I’m in Texas

March 21, 2010

6" or so of snow which fell last night.

OK, I was overly-optimistic about the arrival of Spring.  I was born in Texas and have lived here most of my life, so I have no excuse.  The weather report I saw said we’d have snow but not freezing temperatures so I figured it would melt as it hit the ground.  I didn’t cover the plants.  Mistake.

Cardinal has his Standards for Dining

February 12, 2010

Cardinal doesn't let a little snow stop him.

I had provided food in plates on my deck since the bird feeders were covered in 4 inches of snow.  Not wanting to eat off the floor, this cardinal just brushed snow out of his way and ate off the plate!

Blue Jay in the Snow

February 12, 2010

I had so many bird visitors on snow day.  They were really jumpy.  I put food out on the deck since the feeders were covered in several inches of snow.

Blue Jay

This blue bird was jumping around so much I had a difficult time getting a picture.  He is here every year.  Though he gets ornery sometimes, he gets along fairly well with the other birds.

A Full Day of Snow

February 12, 2010

After a full day of snow, we had a good 4-5" blanket.

We’ve had more snow this year than I can remember having before.  This time, the snow fell ALL DAY.  I know many of you are thinking “So?”, but I have not seen that in the 14 years I have been here.  The photo below shows my younger oak tree in the background.  She’s not a baby anymore!

Snow-covered Labyrinth Garden

Elsie in the Snow

Elsie in the snow with collected leaves

It’s rare for Elsie to be still enough for a photo opportunity, so please forgive the poor lighting.  Elsie was out in the snow Christmas Day investigating the leaves I have collected for use in the Labyrinth Garden.  She is standing in the outside ring of the labyrinth; the leaves are temporarily piled up just beyond the labyrinth.
