The first cosmos bloomed today.

The first of my beloved cosmos bloomed today.  Hopefully, it is the first of many.

I love the way cosmos look when they have gone to seed.  The flower first wilts and closes up tight.  Then bursts open into this star of potential life in anticipation of next spring!  It’s a Star of Hope, how appropriate for the season.

Zinnia, Cosmos, and Achillea

An unusually warm November has kept the flowers blooming in the Labyrinth Garden.  My achillea had stopped blooming in the heat of summer, but bloomed once the temperatures cooled up enough.

Charming form as this cosmos withers

I was intrigued by the pinwheel shape of this flower, and immediately went over to see what had bloomed.   The thin petals were really the curled petals of a withering cosmos.

Two Shades of Pink

I love the dark pink band around the yellow center of these cosmos

I love the dark pink band around the yellow center of these cosmos

I love the two shade of pink in this cosmos — the lighter pink of most of the leaves is really set off by the maroon-pink band around the center.  The two tones really give depth to the flower.
