Coyote Comes Calling

February 18, 2010

Coyote beyond the fence around Labyrinth Garden

My dogs were barking incessantly so I went to see if anything was wrong.  A coyote was just beyond the fence around the labyrinth, having lunch.

Cardinal has his Standards for Dining

February 12, 2010

Cardinal doesn't let a little snow stop him.

I had provided food in plates on my deck since the bird feeders were covered in 4 inches of snow.  Not wanting to eat off the floor, this cardinal just brushed snow out of his way and ate off the plate!

Yellow-breasted Bird Talks to Me

February 12, 2010

Bird looking out over the snowThis pretty bird with the bright yellow front sat on a ladder that was right outside my back door and talked to me for about 45 minutes. I wasn't sure what he was saying, but he was very intent and decisive. Perhaps he was complaining about the menu, or the company, or the lack of a dry spot to land, or all of the above. But I really liked him.Side-view of my yellow-breasted friend

Blue Jay in the Snow

February 12, 2010

I had so many bird visitors on snow day.  They were really jumpy.  I put food out on the deck since the feeders were covered in several inches of snow.

Blue Jay

This blue bird was jumping around so much I had a difficult time getting a picture.  He is here every year.  Though he gets ornery sometimes, he gets along fairly well with the other birds.

A Full Day of Snow

February 12, 2010

After a full day of snow, we had a good 4-5" blanket.

We’ve had more snow this year than I can remember having before.  This time, the snow fell ALL DAY.  I know many of you are thinking “So?”, but I have not seen that in the 14 years I have been here.  The photo below shows my younger oak tree in the background.  She’s not a baby anymore!
