Golden Shrimp Plant, also called Lollipop Plant (Pachystachys lutea)

When I buy plants at nurseries, I make a habit of joining the longest checkout line.  I start a conversation with the person ahead of me by saying “That’s a beautiful plant.  I wonder if it will be easy for you to grow?”  That’s what I did one day last year when the woman ahead of me was holding a shrimp plant.  She said “Oh YES!  I have loads of them.  They grow so well in the shade here.  Don’t need a bit of sun.  I’m buying more because we have a new puppy that dug up some of the old ones and killed them.”

I had a shady bed for which I had given up hope of ever finding color.  The only shade plants I could find were foiliage but no flowers.  I immediately got out of line and went to add one of these plants to my purchases.  I now have two.  When they get large enough, I’m going to propagate them.

I’m always learning new things about what will grow well with the least maintenance in my area from people in check out lines.  Think about it — they have no motivation to sell me something or steer me wrong.  And they have loads of experience gardening in the same soil and in the same weather I work with.  What more can you ask of an expert?

    Hey, there!
Those flowers really do look like shrimp, don’t they. I will have to find some for our front garden here. We don’t get much sun, due to a large elm tree, so they should do well.
    Hope you’re doing well, too!
