Bird's Nest I Found in a Bush in the Labyrinth Garden

Bird's Nest I Found in a Bush in the Labyrinth Garden

Last fall, the man who helps me with lawn/landscape maintenance trimmed a bush a bit too severely and I was afraid it would die.  However, it appears to be coming back strong.  I saw something caught up in the branches today that turned out to be an abandoned bird’s nest.  This was probably well into the interior of the bush when it was built.  I’ve never seen a nest built this low to the ground — this branch is at a height of only about 5 1/2  feet.

Beautiful Pot that was FREE

 Large Planter (recycled) 23"d x 20"h

This is the huge lightweight pot that I grow my strawberries in.   It is 20” tall and has a diameter of 23” at the top.  I found it one day while I was walking my dogs. A lady whose house bordered the park threw it out (still had good-quality potting soil and gravel mulch in it but no plant) because she was moving and didn’t want to transport it.  So I got it for free instead of spending $169 or more for similar pots.

Strawberries Ready for Picking

Strawberries turning red

Strawberries turning red

My “Berries Galore” everbearing strawberries are turning red, ready to eat!  I grow these in a giant pot that I recycled.  I have to say I can’t particularly recommend this type of strawberry on taste, but it does seem to live through the summer droughts and winter freezes without too much fuss.

First Pink Rose Opens on New Bush!

"Angel Face Climbing" Climber Rose

"Angel Face Climbing" Climber Rose

I bought 2 new climbing roses from Walmart this year.  (I couldn’t find them on their web site.)  The yellow rose plant looks very healthy but no blooms yet.  The pink rose plant immediately turned black and looked like it was going to die, but on 4/18  a rose had bloomed and today it was fully open.  It is an “Angel Face Climbing”  Climber Rose.  The flowers are supposed to be “deep mauve-lavendar” but they look pink to me.

Passion Vine flower

Passion Vine flower

Flowers have been blooming in the Labyrinth Garden for a couple of months now.  This is the widest variety of flowers I have had blooming in early spring.  My favorite is the Passion Vine.  Ones similar to this bloomed on my grandparents’ farm when I was a kid and I promised myself I would have them in my yard when I grew up.
